Chickens

  • Chickens at home are a wonderful way to begin homesteading. Chickens provide you with fresh, nutrition-filled eggs, it is rewarding and can bring lots of enjoyment, and it’s something the whole family can get involved in! Not only do you get to watch your chickens have fun, but you get a direct link to see where your food comes from. There are many different types of chickens you can get. Most people begin with egg layers. During the spring, Montrose Feed and Supply takes pre-orders for Golden Comet chicks. You can ensure that these chicks will be healthy, cared for, and that they are the sex that you want. Whereas, if you get chicks from a chain store, you may end up with 11 roosters and only 1 hen! It is important to purchase or build a chicken coop so your chickens have a home and a place to nest. Make sure you can safely lock your chickens in at night because predators are always around! When looking for a chicken coop, make sure to leave 1.5 to 2 feet of indoor space per chicken.

  • Some of the best ways to care for chickens during the winter months include keeping their shelter warm and dry. Make certain that the coop is well-ventilated to deal with the moisture and the ammonia from the chicken droppings. Double up the depth of the bedding you use. Extra bedding will help provide more warmth by generating heat. Note that it is important to clean out the chicken coop to prevent moisture issues. Make sure that chickens get enough food throughout the winter months as working to keep their bodies warm will enhance their metabolism. A good quality feed is important to help keep them healthy and warm throughout the winter. Winter leads to less light, which means that chickens will naturally not produce as many eggs. One of the ways to combat this is by adding in artificial lights to stimulate egg laying. Provide continuous clean drinking water. Montrose Feed and Supply carries heated buckets and waterers to help prevent problems during the freezing winter months.

  • Chicken feed will depend greatly on the size flock you have
